The Government is planning to ‘name and shame’ private cosmetic surgery clinics that fail to provide good quality care.

Cosmetic surgery clinics are to be rated online, offering potential users an objective guide to the quality of the clinics in their area. This will help end the “lottery of poor practice”, according to the health secretary,

A consultation has been launched by the Department of Health with the aim of expanding the ratings programme run by the health regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in relation to NHS services.

There will be four quality ratings:

1. outstanding,

2. good,

3. requires improvement and

4. inadequate.

The need for improved standards for cosmetic surgery patients has been evident since the 2012 PIP breast implant scandal. The Department of health has spoken of shining a light on poor care within the sector and raising standards. Its aim is to develop an open and honest learning culture that encourages people to act on and learn from mistakes whenever they arise. In this way it is hoped that cosmetic surgery patients will feel confident they are receiving the best care, from the right professionals, with the appropriate qualifications.

We shall be monitoring the situation and reporting back on the government’s success in regulating the cosmetic surgery industry.
